The Halifax Estates Story

Halifax Estates originally opened in mid-1970s and is now a 430-home, resident-owned manufactured home community for people 55 and over.

But that transition didn’t happen overnight. We formed the Halifax Mobile Home Estates Association, Inc. and started on the path to resident ownership. That’s when, with the help of Cooperative Development Institute (CDI) and ROC USA, LLC, we purchased and took control of our community on October 13, 2017.

Now, the resident-owned community (ROC) is not only a successful business, but also a thriving neighborhood.

The process of the resident-owned community buying the land beneath our neighborhood brought this community closer together. Not only do we know far more of our neighbors than ever before, but we look out for one another, too. And with no outside landlord to report to, we’re the envy of other nearby manufactured home communities.

Our Member households elect our Board of Directors, which works with a property management firm and also appoints various volunteer committees to help with special projects, celebrations, community improvements and more. The Board submits a budget every year, and the entire Membership votes on it and any changes to the rent before the budget becomes official. We’re running the business that is our community on our terms, by our rules, for the betterment of ourselves and our neighbors.

Halifax Estates is a well-established community for people age 55 and over who enjoy a small town feel with easy access to the train, Boston and Cape Cod. An on-site club house offers various activities, including dances and flea markets. We have a gym, a library, and a well-stocked workshop. Pool tables in the club-house lend to hours of fun with neighbors. The outdoor space includes a horseshoe pit and a boccie court. A singing group meets weekly and performs for residents and nursing homes. Each year we hold a Craft Fair, the proceeds of which are donated to provide gifts for kids in need during the holidays. The Helping Hands Committee assists struggling residents with costs like heating bills, medical expenses, and home repairs.

Our wide streets and well-maintained homes provide a community-feel that is welcoming and friendly. Grocery stores, fine restaurants, and public transportation are all close by. Historic downtown Plymouth is a 20-minute drive. For those wanting to explore, Boston is 45 miles away, and the Cape Cod Canal is just 30 miles away. Looking for an outdoor activity? Head to East and West lakes, just three minutes away, renowned for large-mouthed bass, and white and yellow perch. If golf is your pastime, the Country Club of Halifax is five minutes from our community.

Halifax is a well-established community for people who enjoy a welcoming neighborhood in an ideal location.

Ask anyone who lives in Halifax, and we’re sure they’ll tell you it’s a little slice of heaven.
